European identity is very much rooted in Christian spirituality. We are convinced that a responsible future can only succeed through the transmission of European intellectual and spiritual heritage. In this transmission, Benedictine monasteries have a special mission, because for centuries they have been able to combine lived spirituality with scientific reflection and thus meet the cultural, social and political challenges of their time.
Knowing the necessity of such spiritual centres, the ST. HILDEGARD-AKADEMIE EIBINGEN E. V. CENTRE FOR RESEARCH WORK AND EUROPEAN SPIRITUALITY was founded. It sees itself as an institution to strengthen the spiritual and scientific tradition of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Hildegard and to make it fruitful for the future of a Christian Europe.
The focus is on making accessible the life's work of St Hildegard of Bingen, whose universal significance and relevance for the Church and the world was reaffirmed by her elevation to the status of Doctor of the Church in 2012. The abbey has already been active in research on its patroness for over a hundred years. The academy aims to secure the existing scientific resources and to make people aware of the theological and spiritual contribution of the church teacher Hildegard for today and the future in a sustainable way.
